Chapter 14

Ruya

"Sadavir!" Josh called, following after us.

I huffed a laugh and wrapped my arms around Sadavir's neck, feeling only bare, shower-damp skin across his broad shoulders and the warm chest that was pressed to my side. "What are you doing?" I tried for unaffected, maybe even stern. But my voice came out all breathless and silly.

"She wants to know what you're doing," Josh said impatiently, since apparently Sadavir wasn't focused on reading my lips. "And I'd like to know the same thing. You can't just…touch people like you own them, you ridiculous reptile!"

Sadavir set me down and I realized he had carried me to the bed. Um. I should probably protest now, right? I was an independent woman. I called the shots in my own life now. I didn't have to put up with other people pushing me around. But…I fiddled with the ring on my finger as the two men argued. Didn't that mean I could decide to let people have their way sometimes? Especially when it was exactly what I wanted anyway?

"For the love of the gods," Josh exclaimed. "What is going on in that tiny brain of yours, shifter?"

I propped myself up on my elbows. "What is he saying?" I demanded.

Josh let out a wry laugh. "He's saying that we don't even know if we'll make it out of here alive tomorrow. He says he almost died tonight, and he knows humans are prudes, but you want him as much as he wants you so I can fuck off." I could almost see the human running a hand through his hair in frustration. "I'm sorry Ruya. Come here and we'll get you back to your room so you can—"

His voice cut off on a mumbled umph, and I arched my brows. All I could see was the usual unhelpful blur of shifting light and shadows. "You can't just kiss someone every time you want to shut them up!" Josh sounded a little breathless. And now I knew I was right about how close the two men really were.

"It does work for a while though," I commented, flopping back on the bed with a wry smile. "So you two are a couple? I'm sorry. I didn't mean to cause trouble." I sat up over the edge of the bed, feeling ridiculously disappointed. And a little peeved at Sadavir for his advances, since he apparently had a boyfriend.

But Sadavir was just there all of the sudden, moving with all the silent speed of a striking snake. He touched my face, leaning down into my space. "Stay," he said. It was more a question than a command. But once again, he seemed to have all the confidence in the world. That alpha assurance did things to the pit of my stomach. And lower.

"But Josh—"

"Is an idiot." Sadavir enunciated carefully. "And he likes you too."

The human in question let out a gusty sigh. "Josh," he said in annoyance, "can speak for himself." He came closer, and the bed dipped as he sat beside me.
